I don't believe you "have" to have an account setup. I think you can do manual transfers. Those do take forever to complete. I've done it before. Now I just use a credit card linked to my paypal so its instant. Should be able to do the same with a checking account.

You should be able to set it up for instant transfers. Just fyi for future transactions. I don't ever keep money in paypal.
