My shift shaft slides mov s up and down 2 inches freely

No. Should only move about 1/8" , clutch cover holds it in.

Let me rewrite this, my foot shifter moves up and down freely about two inches. Forget my first post. I did put a new shift shaft on it

Pull the clutch cover and inspect for damage. Make sure star hasn't came loose on drum. Inspect fingers on shift shaft. I've seem them dam stars come loose to point wear it has broke end of drum and needless to say it didn't shift for sh*t. But pulling clutch cover will tell the story for ya.

Must have edited first post because you made it sound like in/out play.
Are you sure shifter is tight on shaft ?
As mentioned above, check everything inside the clutch cover.

Actually just came in from garage from having a smoke. Checked some pieces ànd the clutch cover has a half moon shaped area just below oil sight glass that sets in/out movement of shaft.
