this is something ive been slowly working on since the end of may, just finally have an okay amount of progress to start a project thread.

started out life as a not running but "all there" blaster:

^thats the original "teardown" basically just done "good enough" so that i could run it around the yard. the piston was seized, the crank was rusted, and the thing barely got out of its own way due to crank damage and poor jetting.
rode it around the yard, and finally got it jetted to a decent rideable state. until...

something decided it was a good idea to blast through the left side case. i think it came from the inside of the crankcase because of the big gouge on the inside of the piece that got punched off the bottom of the engine.

after this happened i kinda sat back and looked at the quad. i had to be honest. it was garbage. the tires were balding, the brakes were weak, the rims looked as though someone used a hammer instead of a tire iron, the suspension was shot, the bars were a twisted disgrace and everything was covered in rust slime or both. it was really time for a rebuild. the blaster isnt really my taste in the first place. so i figured id build it up for my girlfriend.

Rules for building a quad for gf who has never ridden:
engine stays as stock as possible, and application of pink paint may be neccesary.

with that in mind i've started my project.

that pretty much brings us up to date, the paperweight of an engine was pulled from the frame, as was basically everything else. i still have some front end pieces to pull off before its completely ready to be stripped and painted.

a few days ago i purchased a bottom end for 70$ off of craigslist, great deal i think. the engine was a mess just like most used engines are but it seemed to be an okay buy even if i could salvage just the cases. but i took the covers off both ends and the internals looked nice too, no funy wear patterns on the gears, everything still had good luster, no cracks etc.

started to disassemble the clutch and pull the plates out, everything looked decent. slight grooves in the basket, but it was also expected. but wtf?! this thing looks weird. ohh i see ITS MISSING A FINGER ON THE BASKET!!!! X(

i got past it and ran the thing through the parts washer along with the cylinder from my other engine that had case failure. the engine came out alright, and the cylinder revealed poor crosshatching, a very slightly pitted head, and extreme carbon buildup on the exhaust port.

sorry for the cellphone pics so far guys, hopefully you like the project, from here on out ill use an actual camera. hopefully ill have paint laid on the frame by this weekend. the cylinder is most likely getting bored .010 over by a local shop, and a veryvery mild self-port job, no alterations to the shape of the ports just a "clean up" job.

yeah its an 84 elky with a 454 bbc and a 4-speed. was pretty mean before my dad deemed it a proper dust collector. poor thing hasnt moved in four or five years now, addiction will do that to ya i guess. ahaha.

just a heads up, im not allowed to post in the "for sale section" due to insufficient post count to inquire about anythign at all, but anyone in massachusetts selling good condtition wheels, exhaust, or suspension pieces im in for buy. even complete engines are interesting me for the right price. just pm me if you have any. thanks

planning on picking out the most obnoxious pink paint for the frame tomorrow with the girlfriend. ill have it all prepped and primered by this weekend with pics to match.

on another note, anyone who is knowledgeable about the wiring harness on these things and has the patience to tech me a few things would be an extreme help. i know i want to delete the oil injection and tors system, and do not plan on running the tail light, but i want to retain the rest of the electrical on the quad. so headlight, ignition switch, ignition system, and key system are staying in tact. any idea of what i need to cut splice etc to make this a neat and well put together job?

I'll draw you out a diagram when I get off work. If I don't get off till later I'm sure you could PM phragle, he's the blaster wizard....

girlfriend insists that her quad must be hot pink framed with black plastics. i really had my heart set on finding hot pink duplicolor spray bomb cans because of the fan nozzle tip, and the tight budget im on. but that color isnt listed even on their company website. so im back to square one of figuring out a color scheme that she likes but actually exists in a spray can by duplicolor.

I hate choosing a color and trying to find it. My wife and I looked at a lot of colors before choosing the green. I actually wanted to go with a yellow or red.

Wow, life really got the better of this project. nearly a month late from when i planned on having the quad to this state, but pictures of it going back together are finally up! i think its gone pretty smoothly aside from money being an extremely limiting factor in wrapping up the project. anyways heres the pics of what i have done so far.

^^front tires suck, and the right side tie rod mustve broken during assembly, the piece that is threaded is snapped inside the rubber boot, hopefully have a good deal on craigslist locally for a new one though.

blastio.jpg

the rear tires a re good though, so i can save a bit of money and reuse them.
the rust on the rear spring is bugging the hell outta me, so maybe ill pick up a rear shock eventually too.

blankkk.jpg

this pic shows how bright of a color the frame paint really is.

and thats all ive got so far aside from the cylinder, boyeson reeds, and a seat thats getting recovered with zebra print.

the rest is on the shopping list, either used or new, depending on what i come across.

-different wheels, these ones look like garbage
-black plastic kit, hopefully the "race" front end, looks more like a 250r than blasty, and cleans up the front imo.
- new set of front tires
- an exhaust off of projectblaster.com, the solar yellow one, i think itl go nicely with the spring color
- i really want a different bumper, i might fab one up myself, i really want a black iron cross shaped one, but they dont seem to be available for the blasters.

then the neccessities, clutch hub holder, freash clutch plates to slap on after the basket is used from my other engine. new wiseco top end, a handful of gaskets, a "shorty" rear brake cable, and some hex head bolts for the bodywork instead of the pos phillips heads that come on this thing.

the mrs would love that, pink frame and sebra seat.. joe dirt can make you that bumper..
i got tie rods but no ends if you need some you can pm me. you can paint or PC the shock if it really bugs you.. keep up the good work and get us more pics as it come's togeather..

our girlfriends must share a brain.... mine is bugging me to get the #2 blasty started... and as well...pink frame, black plastics and a cheetah print seat. not zebra. go figure. did you rattle can the frame? looks good.
