you can't physically see the spring.
look in the middle of the float needle, opposite the rubber tip, you'll see a very small pin sticking out, thats the spring loaded needle.
hold the carb on a slight angle, and it won't push the needle in.
like shown here.........

Yeh I have got the measurement. It was 17 mm roughly. Kinda hard to site it perfectly. I think I have it pretty close though. I had a 50 and it was too small. I tried 55 and it idled highest less than half a turn. I tried a 60 and doesn't seem much better IMO.
