dt250 issues

I have an old dt250 that some one gave me layin around before I decide what to do with it I wanna see if itll run.When I tried to start it it will load up after several kicks and sound like a gun shot I think the flywheel key is sheared off.If any body has any experience with these please let me know any help will be a blessing

Flywheel key could be shot, but it too could be flooded.

How old is it? Points or CDI ignition? Piston port or reeds?

cdi and reeds reeds are good I checked its a 1977

Reason I asked is because oint type ign will act simular when the condenser goes bad. Also, CDI was new tech back then, cdi might be taking a dump. Clean all connections while you're at it.

How long was the motor sitting up before you got it?

Three things you need are compression, fuel in the correct quantity and spark at the right time, you need all three for it to start.

it for 3-4 years im guessing spark is wrong

Maybe it's just reacting to some old gas or a good ethanol buildup in the carb

carbs clean tank to as soon as I get a couple of my other projects buttoned up im gonna check the key way everything else looks ok got fuel air and compression just think timing aint right
