Not sure if this has been posted before, but I thought I would share what I came across in a 400ex owners manual. A lot of us buy used 400ex rear shocks, but have no idea where the previous owner set the compression and rebound screws to. This info is to reset the adjustments to factory stock dampening. Also, 400ex's are set up from the factory for 160 lb. riders. Hope this is helpful to some of you!

    Rebound - Bottom Screw

Turn CW until stop (Full Hard)

Turn CCW Approx. 1 3/4 turns until reference punch marks line up.

Light load / Smooth roads - Turn CCW to soften

Firmer / Rough Roads - Turn CW to stiffen

    Compression - Top Screw

Turn CW until stop (Full Hard)

Turn CCW Approx. 2 1/2 turns until reference punch marks line up.

Reduce compression (Softer) - Turn CCW

Increase Compression (Firmer) - Turn CW

thats good for setting compression and rebound. you also should set spring sag. setting sag will also detemine if a heavier or lighter spring will be needed per the riders weight. once sag, compression and rebound are set, your ride will be almost flawless
