Hi Everyone, Well we were able to get the case apart. Once we took the clutch side apart is slid apart easily. This is what we found. Obviously a cause of the big tansmission fluid burning problem.

Can someone help us with these questions.

What would cause this to break in the case?
I assume I can get it welded but want to make sure we address the cause.

THe second picture shows some discolouration on the crank. Is this normal or should we be worried about that.?

Any thoughts and advice is appreciated.

Yup looks like there's your problem, the coloring on the crank is typical, as long as no up and down play and minimal side to side movement- should not be able to twist the rod either- the case breakage looks to be from the crank area out into the transmission area which normally means a piston has broken before and the rotation of the rod pushed the piston through the case - fairly common as well , the cases can be welded and then lapped for true

Hi Bruce, Thank you very much. I am hoping to find a place tomorrow to weld it. We have owned this for 3 or 4 years and never had any major issues until now. No engine related problems. I dont see anything broken. Do you think this would have happened before our ownership? Could that piece have stayed in position that long? I mean 3 or 4 years? When I took the cases apart it was still in its place. It just looked like it was bent in but as soon as I touched it it fell out. I see that the rod says hot rod on it. So obviously its been replaced at some point.

I'd say its probably a previous failure from another top end, with it having been touched it could have been overlooked and finally let go after years of use - Hard to say, but its pretty common all around to see these issues, while the cases are apart I'd inspect both sides well for any cracks or damage

Thank you very much. Sent a picture to a place next town over and he says it can be fixed. Hoping to take to hime tomorrow. Now the crank is still in that side? It didnt come out. Does this need to be pressed out?

If the crank is stuck to one bearing it will need to be pressed out properly , do not hammer on a crank ever- have to put that out there - but yes typically a tool can be made to press it out at home, if you look at the tools that are sold you can get a grasp of how they are made, if you don't have the skills to make some tools a shop may be your best option

Ok. Thank you. I have a number of pullers etc so I am sure I can figure that out. Any tips on things to watch out for on re assembly?

Double check anything you removed or touched, double check the trans goes through its gears after the cases are bolted back together before you put the clutch on, other than that not much.

Make sure shift star is turn so it alines with notches in the case. Otherwise it Will hit case. And halves won't go together.
If crank was left in stator side Case. And no damage to that half and everything us clean you can leave it in. Stator side has an interference fit between crank and. Inner bearing race.crank has to be pulled in. Ir inner race needs to be heated up with indirect heat. Then crank will drop in.
Clutch side bearing. Slides right over crank ussualy. Follow all tourqe specs
