Nope, not unless you have a leak. I like using a little Permatex with my VF3's, but I don't feel its essential unless the cage won't seal with the gaskets. My VF3's wouldn't seal well unless I gooped it, but this isn't always the case.

hey, what jets were you running in the 28mm pwk carb im getting one soon and no one is responding to my thread?
 
Ah, Ok. I ran a 148 main, and, I THINK a 48 pilot. I would buy 145-155 mains and a 45 pilot just in case. A non-ported top end will probably run better on a 45 pilot than a 48 pilot.
