Adjustment of front shocks.. (stock)

Hi guys.

Im awaiting some used shocks. But i can see on the picture that they er in 3rd position and not the softest as i want.

I know you turn that "crown" at the lower part of the shock. But the spring will tension and make it difficult to ex. hammer with something to make it turn..,

So my question is whats the best approach ?How do u normally do it? mounted / unmounted.. ?

i've always adjusted them on the quad. Just take a pair of channel locks and open them up and bight down on the bottom of them and turn them the direction you need, it'll make a loud noise from the pressure of the shock

i just did this..... just put the front end on a spare tire to take the pressure off the shock then use a pair of channel locks to turn the dial.
