I asume it's a xr 250 motor that has about 28-29 hp
i'll be better on trails and hill climes than fast tracks and hevier, you will see that it wil not rev as fast as a blaster motor and not have the reponse as a 2 stroke

Mine had the exact same cracks , also agree it's from twist
i don't jump much so i'm guessing its from going over big rocks and ledges and stuff
I welded in a small reinforcement plate in the center of the cracks

You need to remove the side cover
put 2 or 3 bricks or someting under the wheels on that side to
tilt the bike so almost no oil will be lost
Most likely you will need a new gasket
then remove the clip and refit the side cover
just have to plug the hole in the carb
and don't forget...
The 5-valve 660 engine came from the xtz660 bike (built between 1992-2000) witch was a water cooled evolution of the engine in the xt 600 and earlier xt 550 (from way back 1983)

Don't need one , if you want to disable it just remove the side cover and remove the plastic gear that drives the pump, then refit the side cover, and cut and plug the connection on the carb

I'll jsut add that a flat type of tyre will give tou better ability to slide sideways (driff :) ) and amake it feel a bit more stiff on paved roads
