when to go up in bore size?

Asking because I recently bought a blaster from a friend that had no compression. it's .40 over and has been re-ringed once already,he gave me a brand new .40 piston kit with it.

Now, am I stuck with a new piston that i can't use or can I just get away with a hone?

You need to measure the bore, sometimes but not often bores can be re pistoned and ringed!

if there is no damage to the cylinder walls......

stick that piston in the bore, with it at the bottom of the bore, measure from the bottom, the clearence between the cylinder and piston skirts, if it within spec,
(no more than .004 i believe)
it can be used with just a light hone to add cross hatching for new ring sealing
