Just out of curiousity have any of you guys ever participated in a demo derby? Im planning on getting a 4 cylinder car to maybe run this summer at the local fairs.

Was thinking about this if I could get it for 4-500.

I might also talk to the local junkyard to see if theyll give me a old beat up car that runs and drives in turn for me to run their name on the car and to bring it back when im done.

for demo derby get ajunker v8 with a lot of muscle and move the radiator and get a toombstone bumper. it's like a 4inch thick steel bumper hooked up to the undercarriage
just watch the vid it's jinda cool
he kinda yacks a lot but informative

Make sure you get a copy of the rules for your local track before you buy and mod a car. It will help you decide what and what not to do to the car.

I want to get into it but you understand the amount or wiring you have to fix right? I know ford has a device ( Can't think of name ) Have a device in the trunk that in the case of any head on collisions the fuel supply will shut off. So you gotta locate, and rip that out, you gotta rip out the heater core, glass, exhaust. You're in for a good half year of work if you do this.

Didn't notice you already put up this guy.

Dunno know about US rules but in Oz the fuel tank has to replaced with a smaller volume one and be relocated.

The original tank has to be removed.

some places make you relocated fuel tank into the back seat.

you need to relocate your battery if you want to even remotely save that(i run it in the passenger seat with a fuel cell in the back seat)

most places wont let you put reinforced bumpers on.

i know you probably wont be able to weld the doors either, must be chained.

pop off your hood and pull it down a bit so give some protection to your radiator if you cant relocate it.

I used to run derby's all the time! i have run probly 30-40 shows GET THAT CAR! any w platform are is tough as nails! use the front end of it if you need any help man i will give you plenty of pointers to get that car up an going good

I used to run derbys years ago.As said an older strong v8 will be best. There are rules but they were not anything unreasonable. No reinforcing what so ever allowed!!All glass has to be removed(even broken glass),all doors chained shut, seatbelts in working order,no antifreeze water only,no headlights blinkers etc, remove all seats besides drivers, remove any cloth headliners etc,we had to drill a hole 3 inches (i believe) up from the bottom of the tank and install a screw. They would tech inspect you as they only want a small amount of gas in case of fire. One thing that alot of people do is take the backseat out and put it on the drivers side against the door to help you brace any drivers door impact.

if you run this please put in some safety bars at the least if not a cage i have seen lots of compact cars get the passenger door smash in almost to the drivers seat because ppl dont worry about the most important thing there own safety also seen lots of noses get broken from air bags! also lots of places have a mini car wheel base limit make sure you fit in that category before you buy a car, and this hole thing about v8 cars every one is saying year they mite be more powerful but you will be running with a whole different class and i have seen W body cars lay the smack down on some bigger rear wheel drive cars. like i said before if you need any help contact me i will help you out i love smashing cars!

Most us Derby's (Notice my Screen name) require you to use either a Jeep can or a boat tank located directly behind the drivers seat. Your fuel line runs through the car and passes through the fire wall to the carb. This keeps it from Getting damaged. I ran several derby's before giving it up about 5 years ago. Several top 3's and I made the main event in every derby I ever ran out here in Northern CA.

Also, make yourself some zoomies to keep your exahust from getting messed up. You can see my 4x4 zoomies in the pic above and here are some others I made

After my heat (Qualified 1st out of it). Fixed the car and took 3rd in the main. Found myself as an outsider against a uncle and nephew.

This picture shows the hand throttle, always a good idea in case your gas pedal cable brakes.

If you decide to run a Full size class, I would recommend you find yourself an older fors 500cfm Carb like this one.

And always ALWAYS build your own motor mounts, the stock mounts break way to easy!

I ran several other cars as well, if you have any questions shoot me a PM, I still help some friends build cars every year. This pic was how the car entered the Best of show before the Derby. The fenders were cat as soon as that was over to get it ready fro the heat.

haha i saw that spider man lincoln on we-crash im pretty sure, derby's sure have changed a lot in the past few years you can knock the windows out and go have fun or you can do some work and get 3-4 runs out of one car its is addicting and can get spendy some times thats for sure
