Hey everyone,

I'm not sure if there is a new member area so I just wanted to post and say hello. I am the proud owner of an 01 blaster. I've never had a quad before so I look forward to riding. I bought it for $800 with a full FMF exhaust. It didn't want to idle very well (cold here in Iowa). I plan on doing a leak down test, change the plug, new intake filter, check float hight, and adjust the air screw on the carb to work everything out. Also the old owner has mixed gas in the tank so I will put fresh fuel in the tank and make sure the oil injector is working correctly. Other than That can you guys think of anything that I should check out?

I appreciate any help,
Andy

If i were you i would get rid of that oil injection all together and just pre Mix your gas 32:1.

Why exactly would you do that? I dont own anything else that requires any mixed fuel.

The oil injection can fail and that would be catastrophic to the motor. Thats why it's recommended to skip that part and just mix the oil with the gas in the tank.

I'm just asking because I read a thread where someone was talking about running a hugely upgraded quad and still using stock injection. They also made a point that normally the only reason they fail is because the tanks are ran dry. I'll try to find the post and link it.

This is just as good as an oil dèbate !!
Supposed "failure" is always operator error. Failure to clean around fill cap (dirt into system) failure to bleed system after roll over,, or storage on grab bar.. Yamaha has been using it since the early days, and the cousin of Banshee, the RZ350 used it.

I'm not advocating one way or the other, just saying what it was. I don't even own a 2-stroke :p

Also, if the guy had premix in the tank, it might already be deleted? no reason to use a functioning oil injector AND premix the tank...

Stock pilot is 32.5 , stock main is 90%of the time a 230. You should have at least a 260-270 in there or maybe larger depending on mods etc.. If the oil injection does happen to be deleted than make sure the oil line nipple on the carb is capped off.

Welcome !!

Why is it that newby wrench twisters always want to tear the oil injection off?
40 years of industrial mechanical experience and riding motorbikes and snowmobiles into the wilderness, 3 different trade certifications and as a specialist in machine reliability, I suggest you leave it on.

Atlas, it sounds like you know you way around the rodeo.
You are doing well and asking the right questions.

Steve

Honestly I don't want to pull the oil injection off. I understand that failure of the pump can lead to engine failure but these have been running decades on that system. I haven't had a chance to get into it but if it is already deleted I will address it at that point.

I agree while I dont use the injection system on mine (because it was gone on mine when I got it) My friend has used his since he got it and its an 02. As stated above its all about how well you take care of the system :) Also as stated above If the old owner mixed the gas before you are gonna want to probably check the oil injection system over to make sure its all there to run properly and make sure nothing is broke.

How would I go about testing to see if the oil injection system is working correctly?

I don't know if there is an actual test. I would personally check to see if it is blocked off which requires taking the cover off on the right side of the clutch cover off.. (it's the side where the yamaha logo is ) there are threads on here that will show you oil injection block off. If you don't see any evidence of a block off then bleed the system and use it. But be cautious and take care of the system as stated above

First make sure the tank is hooked up with the line, and that it goes into the clutch cover and the pump is all there. Then the other line from the clutch that goods to the carb is there. If all is intact, you can pull the spark plug , pull the oil line off the carb and kiuck it a few times. Seecif any oil comes from the oil line. The injection pump works in accordance with the rpm so the higher rpm the more oil it adds and vice versa.. With just kicking it a few times it may take a few kicks but you will know if it's pushing oil..

BTW: if the oil injection is hooked up and working and there is mixed oil/gas in the tank than you need to drain the fuel/oil mix from the tank and just use fuel.. Adding xtra oil to the gas while the injection system is hooked up will actually lean out the motor...
