Hi everybody,

Just bought a blaster, (year unknown) for about 800$ cash from my best friend whom got it in a trade from his neighbor. only reason he needed to get rid of it was because he was moving to an army base 300+ miles away and had no way to transport it or room to ride it there. (hints the awesome price)

anyway, I am a well experienced mechanic in the car world, especially with small displacement turbocharged engines (drifting, auto-x etc.) ;and I used to own a Honda CRF250, which I loved, but had to sell back in college.I am pretty competent in wrenching on single cylinder, carburetor engines.

but I dont know what year and model this blaster is. I know it has to be within 2003-2006, because the headlight is NOT mounted on the handle bars, and the plastics are white and the frame is red. also it has disc brakes in the front and one in the rear.

I am also having an issue with the idle. the quad ran fine when I rode it at my friends house shortly after he bought it. he also talked about how he fixed the idle speed on it. he claimed that he adjusted the brass flat-head screw on the carb body itself (close to the intake/filter side, right beside were the main fuel line connects).

Now, the day I bought it, the engine idles scary high. when i crank it, without hesitation the engine shoots straight up to a very very high RPM and I shut it off.

I then saw that the tors screw was another way to adjust idle on this forum. went out to try and check that and the screw turns freely without ever "bottoming out" or coming loose....as if the threads are damaged

now this is peculiar to me because the quad has obviously been modified to run a twist throttle. it does not have a thumb throttle like I have seen on here.

welcome to BF !

I believe this is due to the twist throttle with TORs brick still on carb, or the non functioning idle screw on it.
(more below on this)

but....it could be an airleak :

or the slide was installed wrong and the slot isn't aligned with the pin in carb on kicker side

ditch all that tors sh-it !

use this tors delete cap/kit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-Blas...ash=item2ee47817bd:g:qg0AAOSwpdpVcbAW&vxp=mtr

as far as I know, twist throttles require a different cable specifically for them, are not compatible with the TORs unit or that stock cable, and require a regular carb cap like the kit above provides.
I'm leaning toward this being your high idle problem.

not sure what kind of terrain you ride, twist throttles are dangerous IMO, in anything but flat or sand.
I'd luv to film someone run a twist throttle on an atv in the rough/hills I ride in :D

you can also disconnect the cable at the throttle to see if that lets it idle better and determine if that twist/cable/tors unit combo is holding the carb slide open

Thanks for the prompt reply!
Im still reading thru the links you posted.

I actually like the idea of having the thumb throttle as it was intended.
+ i have to teach my girlfriend how to ride so that would definetly help. Dont want any accidental jerks to cause her to run into my truck or for her to pop a wheely or somthing

I dont have any rough terrain i can ride on. I have a wide open feild around my house thats basically flat and stretches at least 5 football feilds long.

I dont know why he was so into the twist throttle. Thumb seems so much more lodgical.

This quad seems like it was built to race. It has an aftermarket pipe and a DG muffler. The rear axle is aftermarket i think. It is wider so the wheel base is staggerd.

The battery is deleted. I think he said also that it was changed so it only ran pre-mixed gas and not regular with the oil automatically mixed. (Not 100% sure if thats a thing)

There is no brake light.

post up some pics, lets see what you're working with :)

blasters never had a battery unless someone did a DC conversion and added it.

twist throttles = whiskey throttle

is the oil injection deleted, and the nipple on the carb blocked off ?
leaving that injection nipple open on the carb without oil going into it = big airleak.

BTW. he installed a brand new chain before selling it too me. I noticed in one of the TORS delete threads something about UN-plugging some wires. so I just texted him and asked if he recalls re-connecting anything. its midnight here in NC so I think hes asleep. I guess Ill get some answers tomorrow.

and If you could provide links to all that I need to convert this back to a thumb throttle and do it cheap that would be awesome. I dont want a 300+ throttle upgrade kit. this is not a performance quad for me in any way. just a toy for me to fiddle with on the weekends.

The red cap on the carb is blocking off where the oil injection used to go. Be sure to premix your fuel, most of us run 40:1

The vin for a Blaster is on the bottom of the frame rail below the shifter.

The year is the tenth letter/number of the VIN.

1988 = J
89 = K
90 = L
91 = M
92 = N
93 = P
94 = R
95 = S
96 = T
97 = V
98 = W
99 = X
2000 = Y
2001 = 1
2002 = 2
2003 = 3
2004 = 4
2005 = 5
2006 = 6

Welcome to the site.

cool so my quad is a 2005!

so i took off that black cover on the twist throttle to find a simple wheel held in by one screw. the throttle cable runs around that wheel and then down vertically around the wheel that is twisted on the grip. the cable looks like its been chewed up pretty bad. its holding on to that barrel by a few threads. now following that cable back to where there is a locking nut and a threaded end (adjustment at the twist throttle unit) is broken, and it sort of just comes loose.

basically. the entire throttle control system is junk and needs to be replaced. whether it's causing the idle issue or not.

:(

A good eliminator kit comes with cable, carb cap ,drill, tap, idle screw. Easy to do. You need new cable anyhow. Throttle housing should be cheap.

blaster thumb throttle.....

or upgrade to the easier pushing 400ex throttle for a couple more bucks.....
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-TRX40...ash=item2eea21a90a:g:CGsAAOSwaA5WiqOz&vxp=mtr

either will work with a stock cable to the TORs box, or the aftermarket cap/cable/idle screw kits listed above

ok. thats great!

does it matter what year 400ex? i saw some for cheaper but in better shape but the years vary

as far as I know, all 400ex's were the same

AWK you are awsome!.

just ordered the kit with cable, tap, drill-bit, and cap w/ fittings for 40$ free shipping. there is a 400EX thumb throttle unit on ebay for 9$ and its an auction. I bid on it so hopefully he just ends it for 10$. he put 5 days on the auction :(

it looks way better than the one you linked as far as condition. its scratched up, but I'm going to paint it some cool color so it looks like I have mad mod skills

p.s. Quads are so fun to work on and easy to mod. SO much better than the complicated stuff I work on regularly
