hi
im from south africa and just joined the forum as i need some help plz.

my dad got me a blaster about 10-12 years ago. i rode it for a few years and my interests changed.we still have the blaster but has been lying in the yard for about 7-8 years now untouched.

i actually want to start using it again with my son. i know nothing about mechanics and how it works but im willing to learn.

since the blaster has been lying untouched for so long i dont know if i need to replace parts. one thing i can tell you as that the one nerve bar is broken and also the bar at the back which has the break light on it, but i gues thats no train smash. im more worried about the other stuff like the engine and pistons and electrical and whatever else goes with it to make the blaster usable again.

how would i check if everything is in order?

any guides as to how to do it and and help would really be appreciated

thank you

Yikes... Probly alot of stuff locked up.
Def new chain/sprockets, everything regreased, fresh fluids/gas, carb completely cleaned, id change all break pads, hit dry teflon on all brake parts and work it in, new air filter, check for roadant nests, new spark plug, pray that top end isnt frozen.. thats just a start.

Welcim to forum! Is there alot of great riding in your region?

woah thats alot of stuff. what is top end? if it is frozen than what....? is the guide to follow to do all of the above thing that u mentioned?
in the days when i use to ride was really nice. enjoyed it. now wanna get my son involved. its better than him plopped in front of the television.... riding here is good. lol i wudnt no what is great riding...hehehe

Well if it sat untouched out in weather for many years, than all that stuff is shot and deteriorated, top end would be piston and cylinder. Your gear oil im sure is tar by now, and fuel is probably mostly water, fuel goes bad average of 6 months without stabilizers.

you can always get a comp tester and do a compression test.
if it has good compression, clean, carb, clean airfilter...new ngk b8es plug, and fresh gas it should start.
but it sounds neglected so it might cost you some pennies to freshen it up..

It may be a good idea to dump a teaspoon of 2 stroke oil in the plug hole and table spoon or two in the crankcase behind the reeds.

The innards will be very dry after standing for so long, so before you try to start it give it 20 or so good kicks with the ignition off.

This will have the crankshaft deliver oil to the underside of the piston and drop some oil into the main bearing feed holes.

hi thanx for the reply guys.im finally starting with it. before doing anything i want to clean the carb first as i see its kinda important amd it reALLY DIRTY. I managed to get the carb loose but theres a pipe that goes to the place where u crnak it.theres 2 pipes at the crank place, one is coming from the oil bottle to there and the other from there to the carb. i cant seem to get the one in the carb out. any suggestions on how to take it out?

Blaaster in your post you said i shud throw some oil in the plug hole, which plug hole is that? and how do i put it in the crank case?

Dump the oil into the spark plug hole to lubricate the upper cylinder and rings.

The line on the carb has a brass ferrule up against the carb body, try to pry it back down the line. You cann then remove the line from the nipple, take heed though it is on there pretty tight for a reason!

why is it on there so tight.if i do remove it will it be possible to put it back on jus as tight?
or is it possible to clean the carb without removing it.? but now its too late for that question, i already removed it actually i tink the tube has been sitting too long it was kinda brittle...it tore of around the nipple..... hope thats not a bad thing...

if you dont mind blaaster as i go along can i refer to ytou for help on the nex steps to be taken as i know nothing about blasters or engines or how all these mechanics work...

just one more thing before i go start cleanoing the carb......... seen a lot of you tube videos about TORS system something.whats all that about.?
Thanx a MILLION

Throttle safety feature that usually cause more problems than it eliminates. Pre 03 can jut unplug brain under hood, 03+ search for method.
Can use/do this in addition :http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_kw=tors+eliminator+kit
Allows you to eliminate "brick" from top of carb. Considering you really should replace the throttle cable because it has sat so long, best bet is the elim kit, kill two birds with one stone.

How's this project going?

hi Larry hmmmm sorry to say but what u said sounds gibrish to me. have no clue what u talking bout.... like i said its the first time im doing something like this and also have no knowledge whatsoever on cars bikes and how the mechanics work.
are u saying i have to basically replace almost every part of the bike.....

how would i know what needs to be replaced or not.

if you can give me a guide as where to start what to check first..... i tink what im trying to ask is how do i do a full service and check all parts step by step as if i was building a new bike from scratch. if i had to build a bike what steps would i be taking. where would i start and where would i end......?

thanx everyone. people are really helpful.....

going by the 10-12 years old you say this blaster is, i'm going to assume it's the older 88-02 model ?

here's the TORS removal for these models, you need not buy anything to just disconnect the wiring and electronics to disable it.........

http://www.blasterforum.com/threads/how-to-remove-your-tors.655/

or you can go full delete and physically remove everything, including the box on top of the carb and throttle cable that operates it, and replace those items with a TORS delete kit, like this...........

woah i dont even know if the tors is faulty. was jus curious to know whats it all about cz when i googled cleaning the carb something bout tors removal came up.
i dont jus wanna buy parts.first wanna check whats fine and whats not. im guessing il have to go thru everything but where do i start.ok i started with the carb and after that what do i do. do i have to clean the engine.

theres a sponge in the box under the seat. gues i have to replace that cz theres a little oil in that box and some sticky substance which is like a blue colour and the sponge is kinda brittle....

You need to replace the air filter, especially if it is breaking up.

It would pay to leak test the engine to see if the crank seals are in good condition and airtight.

the blue oil you see in the airbox is likely airfilter oil, thats a very common color for it.
IF the airfilter(sponge) is breaking up or torn, then yes it may need replaced ?
IF it is fully intact, you may just wash the old oil and dirt out, (Dawn brand dishwashing liquid works well)
allow to fully dry, and re-oil it with a good foam air filter oil like Maxima or PJ1 brand

yay i finally cleaned the carb....but before i put it back on i want to clean the rest of the bike.....can i just hose it down with water.... is there anything else that needs to be cleaned like the engine andf so forth.
i can only get a new air filter next week.... i have never bought from ebay....is it possible to buy from there and have it posted to south africa.

how to i do all the tests as in leak test spark test and whatever other test.?

You have a good start with cleaning the carb. If you wash it make sure you seal the intake that the carb came off if. you do not want to get water in the engine.

once you get the carb on it take the fuel tank off of it and clean it out and dry it VERY well do not put gas in it.

after that put the tank and carb back on. Get a new spark plug, use a BR8ES nothing else. remove the old one. put the new one in the spark plug boot but do not put it in the cylinder. we need to check for spark.

Get a friend for this it's easier. make sure the gas is turned off. hold the spark plug up against the cylinder so the electrode (the thing that sticks out of the threaded end of the plug) is touching the cylinder. Have a friend kick the bike over. look for a spark.

If you have spark put 1 ml of 2 stroke oil in the sparkplug hole and kick it over about 10 times. then put the sparkplug back in the hole.

If no spark post here. we will help.

Next pull the oil jug off the bike. It is in the back under the rear fender. you can't miss it. dump the old oil and clean it out really well and let it dry completely. put the jug back and get a good quality injectable 2 stroke oil and fill up the jug.

Next. on the bottom of the engine you will see an oil plug. remove that and let the oil drain out completely. put the oil drain plug back. Get some Automatic Transmission oil (ATF) ATF type F. next to the kick starter there is a oil fill plug. you can't miss it. remove that and fill the crankcase with 650ml of ATF type F. no more no less.

There is still no gas in the tank hopefully. Hold the throttle wide open and kick it 10 times.

now put some gas in. hopefully 93 octane or higher. turn the petcock on the bottom of the tank to on. turn the key on and try and start it.

report back here and we'll figure everything else out.

If it does start DO NOT go tearing around on it yet. shut it off and we will get started making sure it is sound and ready to be ridden.
