Cellphones take enormous pics, in both pixels and mb.
on my laptop I resize them to 30% of original size,
on my phone with Pic Resizer Lite, I set them to 640 x 480
both take a 4-5 mb pic down to just a few hundred kb's with little to no effect on quality for this purpose.
this also allows way quicker uploads and shares, and saves on cell data

Another option is to reduce your aspect ratio and photo quality in your camera settings.
I typically take pictures at 16:9 with the highest quality setting, but I will typically take them at 3:2 or 4:3 at the lowest quality setting if I plan on uploading them here, rather than my computer.
Also, using flash can potentially raise your file size. Why? I have no idea.
That being said, you can check your file attributes before trying to upload and ensure it's below 1mb.
