Options for air box / intake

I bought a keihin 35mm air striker. It has a 58mm O.D. inlet. I would like to utilize my air box since I do go through some deep stuff once in a while and I don't think a uni filter would cut it. I can foresee it going underwater in the future if I just stick a uni on it.

So purchase/make an aftermarket airbox OR cut the stock "elephant trunk" tube back far enough that you can get a 2 1/2" tube inside it and then use a rubber connector on the carburetor end.

Utilizing the stock airbox isn't quite as desirable as having one which is "high flow" the whole way but would keep mud and crud out of your engine.

I ordered a K&N 57mm. I'm sure I can get it on the carb for now till I fab up something to utilize the air box. I'm pretty handy. I bet I can fab something with pvc in side the stock boot and then stick the k&n on the end of it. Is the air box lid a huge restriction?
