I'm going to give the trophy back because I took a grinder to the flywheel tool and took the bad threads off down to the good ones, and it worked as advertised.
that isn't a very good pic of the stator but it's as dirty as it looks, lots of dirt and crud on it. I'm going to pull it off tomorrow and ring it out with a meter.

I used a belt sander upside down held onto a workmate by it's handle and put a new course belt on it and it only took a few minutes to shave off the old threads.
