Handle bar mods?

So bent my handle bars the other day and am considering getting new ones. I've seen people putting risers on them. Is this because of the aftermarket handlebars or is it a comfort thing, or control thing? And best opinions on what to get ?

It's to make a taller person fit better. Several different ways to do it (search)
Also look for bars with "Banshee Bend" bars. They're taller than motorcycle bars.
