Hello all first post on site but have been on this site watching and learning a lot. Just want to thank all of you that have done this swap and shared it on here, because I have learned something from all of you and really helped me be successful on my build. First off I know some guys will probably notice this right off top as soon as I learn how to post pictures. My quad is really a knockoff blaster. It is actually a Barossa 170, but has the same frame as a blaster. Anyway I came across a cheap 1986 yz250 engine and thought why not try it. After 3 months of working on engine and frame I now have a running and riding yz250 blaster.

Have new rear plastics jus don’t have a picture of them yet and factory blaster heel guards. Made my own skid plate as well will have to get pictures of it also. Next on my list is to get rid of these awful shocks. I am only 150lbs and the front end does not move as stiff as can be. The back shock does compress a good bit but comes back up slowly. I don’t have the money for those high price shocks (works, Elkas, fox…) but would like something that would actually work like it’s supposed to for a budget price.

I’ve never tried them but some like OEM Banshee fronts. Lots of rear shocks will work Honda 400/450
Kawa/Suki 450 rear
Look around on this side for info

Thanks for that and after reading a few I see they recommend the oem like you said. But no one says why? I mean as far as what makes a 15-20 year shock better than a new stock replacement?

Update got new rear plastics on. Got new front bumper and rear grab bar on. Flipped front rims for wider stance. Mounted homemade skid plate. Coming together real nice next things are to widen rear to match front and still trying to decide which route to go with shocks. May do new handlebars not really sure. But other than that I’m happy with the progress I have made with this build.

Finally got the banshee front shocks painted and mounted. Have not rode yet with new shocks waiting on my 400ex rear shock to come. But I can already tell a difference my front end actually moves now. Even just me sitting on it it will go down a couple inches and I only weigh 150lbs! Blaster stock shocks wouldn’t even budge!

To those that I know have done the swap like 3wh33l3r rid3r, YZ Otis, best,Crash89, Tbrock77, and anyone else that I don’t know of just wondering what sprocket sizes did you like and end up using?

Once I figure out what sprocket size I am going to try will be replacing the stripped out tensioner bolt. Thinking of trying a 12 up front, already have 40 tooth on the rear. Think I seen someone was using that setup on another post can’t remember exactly who right now but hopefully someone will reply with a little info or a better suggestion?

The problem with a small front sprocket is it’s harder on the chain as it wraps around a smaller circle plus fewer teeth are engaging the chain
Plus I don’t think a 250 will need to be geared that low.

Ok thanks I was just going to try it since I seen two other guys with the same swap was running a 12 tooth. One said he had a 12/40 and the other was 12/46. I really just need something smaller than the 15tooth that was already on the yz250 when I got it. Don’t get me wrong it’s fast as hell with the 15 but I mostly ride trails so I need a little more bottom end.

Well first off. hi.. lol I too have a yz250 swapped and I have a 14T front and a 48T rear. Being the bike was originally 50T I wanted to keep mine geared the same as the bike as possible. But I didn’t take in the bike has big wheels and I’m running Banshee’s so I’ll probably be doing a 44-46.

Yea I am currently running a 13 and 40 tooth and I like it for now. At least I can make it up the hill in my backyard now!
I changed the front because I was worried about going to big in the rear and losing ground clearance or not being able to use the guard.
What year is your Yz motor?

I’m running a 2002 yz250 engine. And has its factory 14t on the front. And did have a factory 41t on the rear. But seamed a bit much on takeoff. So I thought to gear it like the Bike that had a 14-50 so I put a 48t on the rear.. not thinking the the ratio wasn’t correct because the bikes wheels are bigger the the blaster haha so now it got so much gear that I can take off in second gear. Hahaha was thinking about putting a 44-45 on the rear. Mainly use is in trails and field playing.

Yea I basically use mine the same trail riding and playing in the back yard. My motor is a lot older it’s a 1986 but I completely rebuilt it. Like I said previously I like the 13/40 so far only have about 5 hours on that setup, but pulls great thru all gears. In the process of switching to hydraulic front brakes the drums have to go!
