like they say it is a timing issue it only takes a few degrees to make it go in reverse as i have this problem on my 03 but then again i was trying to use an 02 plate had to buy the 03 plate to make it go forward so make sure you have the right year plate hope this helps

that sucks that both went in the same day let me know what years they are as i have a spare engine case from an 02 on down, the only thin that it would need is a new crank and your cylinder and heal and i would have the shifter bar that goes through it also just shoot me and off and ill take...

no the timing only has to be about 15 degrees off as i had recently found out when i used the stator assembly off of my 93 and put it on my 03 it ran backwards i then ordered the assembly for the 03 and it runs perfect let me know what year your motor is as i have a spare stator assembly with a...

the last poster hit it on the head it is with your piece not bieng mounted as that takes out the slack for the most part allowing it to return to the normal position

i had the same problem after my rebuild and i found that my base gasket between the block and cylinder was leaking and once i replaced it it ran perfect like it was suppose to do so you may want to do a leakdown test on your bike and there is a link somehwere here on how to make your own tester...
