Hello!

My name is Dan, I'm from Northeastern Pennsylvania and I recently acquired an almost immaculate 1991 Blaster WITH A TITLE. This has no aftermarket parts and even has the original tires from 1991 (three digit DOT code vs. a four digit DOT code).

I've wanted a Blaster since I was about 12; I'm 26 now and finally got one...around the same time I closed on my house.

Anyways, I've had to do a lot of repairs since I've bought it because this thing sat for many years and was repaired haphazardly.

There was no washer between the clutch adjustment rod and the lock nut.
A lack of a five-cent washer and the previous owner's incompetency caused over $400 of damage, luckily none to the case halves or bottom-end.

I'm excited to get it going and let everyone know what I think of it.

Overhaul Time!

Good Score and nice job so far bringing her back !

Is that an eBay/Amazon/Niche/Chiwanese cylinder kit ?
check piston to cylinder clearance and that all the ports are chamfered ......

It was a Chinese kit from Amazon; I think it was about $160, so definitely not the cheapest one out there. Since I've watched one of my friends learn the hard way that the cheapest of the cheap rebuild kits usually ends in a fantastic explosion, I decided against that.

I threw away the wrist-pin and bearing since they were utter garbage. I bought a Hot-Rods wrist-pin bearing and used a Yamaha wrist-pin.

I used a round file, several grades of sand paper (starting with 240 grit and ending with a 1000 grit), and a bit of 10w30 to remove any burrs in the cylinder jug. I did the same treatment on the piston itself to remove any slag. I then chased all the threads, since most of them looked like total crap.

I then checked my ring-end clearance, and all my ports to compare them to the stock jug and piston. Everything was good, so I slapped that baby together and have been ripping on her since last weekend.

Also, I bought some generic clutch plates and soaked those in 10w30 (factory specified oil) for a few nights.

I've had the clutch cover about four times to adjust the clutch adjustment rod, check the springs, and retorque everything.

While I was in there, I properly deleted the oil injection pump. I'm a nerd and like premixing my gas. 32:1 seems to be its happy spot where it has very linear power at my altitude. Mind you, I'm running stock jetting, albeit, a completely rebuilt carb.

"If you ain't mixing gas, you ain't haulin' ass."

All-in-all, my stock 1991 is significantly faster than my buddy's 2001 with a full FMF, reeds, and torque spacer.

Imagine that.

Nice skidplates where'd you get them.looking good

Thank you Sly.

So the main frame and chain/swing arm guards are from a company known as XFR. They're reasonably priced and American made!

The A-Arms are from Carl's Powersports Supply. Please read my review on them:

"I was a tad skeptical on these since they were very cheap in comparison to other A-Arm Guards, however these are made extremely well. The welds have a very nice pattern and are gusseted quite well. There is a tad of finesse needed to put these on (loosely tighten the center bolt and move everything else into place), but perform well!"

Blaster with Aluminum Wheels.jpg

So I may be a lucky SOB, but I ended up scoring a set of aluminum wheels for $140 over the weekend.

The front wheels came from some sort of Yamaha and the rears are ITP's.
The front tire size is a 21x7-10 and the rear is a 22x10-10.

What is a good brand to use, since these tires are pretty shot?
I used to love using Holeshot's when I had my YFZ450 back in high school, but since I don't race, I want something that's good on rocks.

I'm used to my bike and just getting whatever cheap, s*** tire. I always followed the mantra "If it's black, round, and made of a rubbery material, there's a smile on my dial." However, the girlfriend said that sounds like a penis joke.

**UPDATE TIME**

So it's been about two months since I've looked at this.

I'm happy to report that my Chiwanese rebuild has easily 35 hours on it now.
I've also replaced the sprockets, chain, and experimented with some Amazon Special Tires.

They work awesome.

Here's where it's at now.
