so i have a 72 plymouth satelite and it ran and drove but it was then parked for 20 years and im going to attempt to start it and make it run again! but what are all the precautions and parts i should change before trying to start it? should i try pouring gas in the carb insteed of fuel tank since it might be old and rusty??

besides the above mentioned, after sitting that long,
i'd be concerned with getting them pistons free'd up with some oil down each cylinder

btw.....i took my drivers test in my dads 71 sattelite/318,
33 years ago, LOL
yours wouldnt be blue would it ?

funny you would ask it actually is blue under the rust lol! would you recomend putting oil down spark plug holes?

if it's been sitting that long, without turning over ?
definately a teaspoon full, or 2 down each cylinder
then unhook the coil wire and get her cranking over a few times to get that oil moving, and the oil pump pushing some up into the valve train,
just to get everything lubricated before you put fire into it

Too take AWKs post a step farther. Some penetrating fluid, left in for a couple of days will get deep into corrosion and free stuck parts. The best off the shelf stuff I've found is Schaeffer's Penetro 90 but a 50/50 mix of ATF and diesel fuel works great. I leave that in the engine anywhere I could get it and leave it to work for a couple of days. Then motor oil top and bottom and turn it by hand for a few complete revs. That would give you the best chance of doing no damage. I've helped bring to life several long forgotten cars and trucks. A couple which need chainsaws to get them out. When you get the engine spinning free and are ready to try to start it. Put a spoon full of a heavy oil on top of each piston and use starting fluid sprayed into the carb (watch out for back firing). The heavy oil will help increase compression until things wear back in and the starter fluid gives it enough uhff to fire. And to start out by passing as much of the fuel system as possible.

so should i just hook the fuel line into a can of gas for now?

Yes, the lines and tank cannot be trusted.
and I cannot give you any better advice than Dksix. I am a diesel/ATF man myself. Or you can use Kerosene.
In any event, his advice is perfect, especially the gentle free up. Turning it over easy before starting. Great advice all of it.

Get the carb working for real, accelerator pump and all.
Flush it with carb cleaner and penetrating oil or take it off and clean it out if you have to.
Check that the fuel pump works and fills the carb and the accelerator pump works.
What does the oil look like? Drain it and put cheap stuff in there for now. Too much chance of water and critters in there.
Crank it over on the starter and look for oil pressure. Use the ether and oil so you don't wash the rings and it has compression.
Keep medium revs (2000) when it starts and let it run a minute at that.
If it skips, you may want to slowly pour a couple glasses of water, then ATF down it as it revs to free rings and valves and carbon and rust.

Nothing I like better than a good revival!

first thing's first before cranking to motor over pull a plug any plug if its wet on the end some seals may be bad from sitting (just a precaution i always take) then change fuel filter plug's wire's rotor button and points then change the oil and oil filter put fresh gas in and a good battery... give her some cranks if it doesnt fire up pump the gas a little like 3 or 4 times then crank it again.... carb style engine's can be a pain after they sit so long

Marvels mystery oil in the plug holes . That shiz does work . I would recomend a carb off of a running vehicle . No telling wats froze up in the carb . I wouldnt trust the brakelines nor fuel lines. Change oil for sure . Advance is running a 15$ havoline special right now . Plug wires are probobly crap by now also .

pretty obvious but use a new battery, dont crank it for more then 5-6 seconds at a time

have a buddy check for spark, my duster's ecu likes to go out from time to time.

remove the middle wire from your dist. and crank it for a bit. yes you wont get spark but itl get stuff movin and oil back to where it needs to be

you can put some gas down the carb but, keep you face away from it haha. shouldnt blow a fire ball being that timing n everything else should be correct

clean your carb! you should know what one looks like after sitting through a winter now imagine 20 years
