lookin at my reeds today and they seem to be boyesen power reeds

anyhow there are no "stoppers" or whatever you call them to limit the pedal flap, should i be concerned or do boyesens not require them? :-/

ok good u were joking. while there, make sure ur reeds arent bent or anything, and there completly sealing agenst the reed cage. if not, time for new ones. make sure u leak test when putting back together. trust me u will have a leak there. use Copper rtv to seal it.

Stoppers perform 2 jobs, they stop the reeds flapping like Grannies undies on the line in a strong wind.

The other, is to allow the reed to bend uniformly around the stopper, rather than a sharp bend where they are attached.

You should loose no power when using stoppers.

First time I went to the dunes I had a Blaster with out the stoppers. Had to flip my reeds after every ride or it didn't want to start. That was with some vito's carbon fiber reeds. They seemed to be more prone to holding that bent open shape. Got some of the stoppers and didn't have a problem after that.

ive run with them and without. they keep the reeds from going to far and breaking/cracking. ive taken them out and got better response out of stock reeds, but having said that i also broke a reed when not using them.

No way?
I am incredulous. I run without the stoppers on most of my KTMs and sleds over the years.
Also, the reed hanging open 1/8" is no big deal, it closes completely on the first piston pulse.
My KTM had 1/8" worn off the corners (open) and still started and ran but started and ran better when it was repaired.

I think the carbon fiber is more prone to fraying too.

Here are some picts:

Top 3 are stock KTM reeds, with the stopped and note the fillers inside the reedcage, note one is larger than the other.
The bottom two reeds are Boyesen, note one has a hole in a reed. I believe this is from sand and water making it past the air filter.
The engine ran well and still had great power, just started a bit harder and didn't idle nicely.

Here is the stuffer block removed from the KTM reed box.
The horizontal divider can be removed separately too.
Power suffers if you run without this stuffer block, even though it is on the outside of the reeds.
Swapping big or small hole stuffer blocks moves powerband up or down a bit.

I have noticed a low compression motor (on the verge of a rebuild) tends to eat reeds without stoppers. this might be why some of you have great luck with or without stoppers
