Question. Yamaha shop gave me a 90w oil to put in trans. I see on here people say to use everything from 10w-30 to atf. What should I use in my 98 blaster.
thx

The blaster manual calls for 10w-30 regular engine oil
I currently run Mobile1 4T full synth 10w - 30 or 40 for wet clutch motorcycles, available at most auto parts stores and even Walmart
I've used the yamaha and honda brands 80-90w from the shops, but like the Mobile1 better

awk question for you. I just split the case on my bottom end and the crank bearing is ceased on the crank. Not pressed into the housing. Is that normal? everything i have seen or read shows them in the case half. Thanks!

That is common especially on stator side. As it has a slightly tight fit on inner race on crank.Need a bearing separator/puller.or bring it somewhere to get removed if you don't have a bearing separator. You do not want to damage crank shaft.. No hammers or prying devices.

If bearings are old. Or show any signs of wear they should be replaced along with new seals . install
Bearings in case before assembly.
They really don’t. Motor was supposed to be completely rebuilt. Had a shifting problem so I drained the fluid which was silver color. Started breaking it down to investigate. Most parts appear like new condition. Can’t figure out why the shift rod has to much in and out play. Had someone tell me that a fresh rebuild will leave the oil silver first couple times but find that hard to believe. Question for you tho. The well that the counter balance sits in appears to have been grind down with a file. Is that normal?

Oils such as belray gear saver is listed as a 80 or 90 et and is (obviously) for trans/clutch. I’ve used it in my son’s and nephews Banshees, works fine. I’ve used atf, 10-30, and now use Shell Rotella T4, high detergent diesel.

They all have been machined in that area from the factory. Unless. A bearing went out on the balance shaft at one time. Or it is rubbing now? Does. Balance shaft have up and down play?

It’s all apart now. The markings on the case look like it was rubbing recently or the one who did the rebuild filed it down. Don’t know why one would do that tho. Balancer had scoring where it was/is making contact

That is why i mentioned checking the bearings for play. If it's rubbing which the clearance is close to case to start with. Maybe the cause for the silver in the oil?
If you lose a balance bearing or the gear it can cause extensive damage
Check balance gear for excessive play in the gear itself.

Agreed. I plan on replacing all the bearings and seals. Once everything is back together I will check for play. But my biggest problem is the shifting. Don’t understand how I have so much in and out play on the shift rod.

They do move in and out some.that is normal. Clutch cover holds it in. If you remove shift lever and clean the shaft upto the seal it slides right out clutch side. Unless it's bent
Check rivots on the balancer gear for wear and play

Will do on the balancer gear. Between the movement of the shift rod and the drum they will move far enough apart to where the star does not make contact with the fork. So your trying to shift but it’s not doing anything.

The clutch cover holds it in

Your confusing me? Balancer gear is at top of engine and. checkhas nothing to do with shift shaft.
Maybe post acouple pics
It’s all in pieces right now. Sorry for the confusion but I stated about the shifting problem and the shift rod moving in and out. You stated the clutch cover holds it in. That didn’t make sense to me but the clutch basket kind of holds it in so that’s why I asked that. 2 different problems. A shifting problem and a balancer problem. Again sorry for the confusion.
