Bogging issues

Hey everybody!

This seems like an awesome little forum you got here. Glad I found it(hard not to if you google anything blaster lol)

I just bought a 1988 blaster. It’s my first wheeler and I don’t know too much about them. Mine has some bogging issues. It seems to get fuel starved whenever I try to open her up. I took the carb apart and it looks brand new. I drained the fuel and put in fresh as the previous owner said it might have bad fuel and they hadn’t used it at all this year.

Also the air filter box and assembly is completely missing. There’s just a filter mounted directly to the carb. I know I’m going either change back to stock or try something else because I don’t trust that little filter in that location once I start riding it on trails.

So next steps on fixing my bogging issues and any ideas on the air box (stock replacement or something else?) would be greatly appreciated. I’m looking for budget friendly solutions if possible. Also anything else you notice that might be missing let me know.

Thanks guys! Here are some pics.

Edit: it’s not letting me add pics, any tips?

That filter directly on the carb is more than likely your bogging problem, besides causing alot of turbulent air entering the carb across the jets, it is also allowing more air in that will need jetting adjusted for it.
a pod filter can be used, but is best with a 4-6 inch piece of pvc pipe between it and the carb to allow the air time to straighten out before entering the carb, but will still need at least the main jetting increased (2-3 sizes larger then plug chop to confirm) for the new air flow and probably an airscrew adjustment for idle to 1/4 throttle too.

plug chops for all airflow or exhaust flow changes

if it's possible, I'd put the stock airbox/tube back together.

Thanks for the help. I’m currently looking at getting the stock air box.

I can see the airbox itself from the rear pic, you need the rubber tube that goes from box to carb, and the metal ring that goes inside for the stock type airfilter to mount too, and that long bolt that holds the airfilter in.
you may find one of them from one of the members here or on the facebook pages ? I know quite a few of us run the CFM airboxes and may still have those stock parts ?
I gave mine to someone years ago :(

I'm guessing that's a 1996 ? it's in good shape still
same as my first new one back in '96, black n purple !

Yes it is a 96. Previous owner told me 88 but I googled the vin and it is a 96.

I was able to find a guy on fb selling the air box assembly and that’ll be here Friday.

Do you happen to know what carburetor that is on there? It doesn’t look like the stock one by the looks of the picture. I would make sure it’s not a Chinese copy as many don’t work good. I learned that the hard way... not on my Blaster, completly different project... anyway, genuine is usually best.
