With top end unassembled, normal to not go in gear??

Hey guys,

My little girl blew a piston on her 94 blaster...was on the coast and didn't rejet so im assuming thats what caused it. So with the top end off i noticed the bike won't go into gear....is this normal?? no matter what gear im in the bike rolls...thx for any info,

without compression the bike will roll in gear, I'll assume the crank and rod are rotating while your doing this ?
the clutch and all gears inside the clutch cover are still in place ?

i realize now that was a stupid question, i should of known better....the bottom end is completely intact. I'm considering going with the Niche top end kit off of Amazon for $98. I really don't want to put I'm assuming chinese junk on the bike but my 12 year old doesn't ride hard so I"m thinking with the correct jetting we'll probably be ok?? im on a tight budget which is the only reason I would consider it....thoughts??

you're wasting $ on those top ends, some may last a while, more than some have failed quickly.
just spend the $ on having your existing top end bored/honed to a new piston, by a reputable shop.

^exactly what he said. I had chinese junk, lasted me two weeks. Waste of cash immediately

Be sure to do a leak down test before starting, then do heat cycles, retorque head and cylinder, break in

ok ok, you've convinced me...lol...i won't go chinese...i found a shop here with a super nice tech he's a banshee builder and seems to really know his stuff. He measured my head and it was at 68mm, he suggested I don't go any higher and to go with a new stock oem yamaha top end. He told me he gets brand new yamaha top end kits complete for a $100 and would charge me $200 labor to do it. I would rather do it myself and save the money but can't seem to find these oem kits new for the price he can get them. What do you all think? thanks guys for taking the time to respond,

If you’re willing to pay $300. Send it to Ken, see if it’s possible to bore it to 68 or its last at 68.25 (I believe). Get new piston with it and I bet it’d be cheaper than that.

If neither sizes work, re-sleeving is an option too that he can provide.

If you doubt my info go to that link, or any Yamaha web site, and look at the prices. Unless that’s price for a used cylinder.

Better yet, use logic. Boring a cylinder is about $60, a quality piston is $120, gaskets $30.

BTW, the same company makes junk parts for Banshees and have a life as long as a fruit fly

I totally agree with you all....Chinese is junk, I get it..just having a hard time understanding why someone from a long term shop would do this and guarantee their work. I did notice some luck with people and these Chinese heads with a bit of maintenance that is...that said, im going to hit up a machine shop called LED machining who do good work here in Portland and see what I can do with this head.....thanks for all the advice guys, doubtful I'm going with the Chinese knockoff.

We try to look out for members.
Even if they had a used stock cyl they couldn’t make any money doing the job correctly.

I’ve read of guys on Banshee pages don’t care and plan to replace their cheap top ends yearly.

Well looks like $220 for everything...the bore was actually at 67.5, Arlan from LED Performance , founder of LRD, will be doing all the machining to 68mm and selling me a ProX piston, cometics gaskets, and bearings. Sound about right? That’s with me installing everything.
