XJ550 Blaster

I finished the wiring tonight. I mounted the fuse box and also ran the extra wires needed for the clutch switch. I mounted the rev limiter to the underside of the cover. I don't think I could fit anything else in that airbox.

I do plan to add a larger cooling fan. A fan off a R1 or R6. The motor gets a little grumpy after an hour of riding. I'll just keep an extra battery with my truck so I can run the fan full blast for 10-15 mins between rides.

That Don't Sound Bad , I Know that Suzuki Quads had Fans on there oil Cooler I Believe , Maybe you could Adapt Something similar so you wont have to carry a second battery !

I bought a +4 swing arm off of ebay, been running it a year and lots of jumps, no problems. The construction of the part looks like quality to me.

I'm not sure if I trust my welding on a swingarm yet. I'm worried enough about the frame. I really want it to be safe.. well other than the whole speed problem.. I heard the 200 dollar swingarms on ebay are not the best and I'm trying to keep the costs down. Maybe I could get the 200 dollar swingarm and beef it up? I do plan to install a rear shock off a 400ex or yfz and a banshee axle.

Due to the massive forward weight of the motor (and me :D ), it's pretty easy to keep the front end down. It would look pretty cool though. I plan to weld the VIN number onto the frame and call this done. I:I

Any other changes would be bolt-on. If we have a normal winter I may install a ski kit and studded tires. The river becomes 6+ miles of state trail when it's frozen.

Man this is a SWEET build!! The cleanest conversion I've seen so far (we do have a really clean one going on over on QRHQ with a GSXR1000 though but it isn't anywhere close to finished). Ride videos man ride videos!!! I just spent the past hour reading your thread and now it's 12:47am so I think I deserve them LOL

Haven't posted on the old Blaster forum for a few months. My 550 blaster had it's third birthday this summer so I thought I would post some updates.

It now has an oil temp gauge next to the tach.

Also, the topic of "usability" comes up a lot with swaps like this. With that in mind, I edited up a quick video showing how it rides. I tried not to make it too boring.

I haven't had enough room to take it up to full speed. On paper its around 100mph with the 50 tooth rear. It has a 6 speed. I picked that motor due to its physical size/shape.. its not going to be anywhere near an R6 or CBR600, but it is just about right for that small frame.

8 Year update.

Added a oil cooler. The cooler is off a 1983 XJ650 Turbo. The lines and oil filter housing are from a 1985 FJ600. No hose clamps or custom lines, all OEM parts matched to make this a bolt-in.

Dyna coil mounts. The wires exit the bottom of the coils.

Sealed NGK plug caps. I had a issue with water/mud causing miss-fires when using standard resistor caps.

Starting with a Raptor 660 harness, I made a complete new harness that uses OEM style sealed connections along with metric bullet connectors.

Dyna rev limiter for that nice sound. The zip tie is used to pull the plastic plate out of the box. I swap between a standard rev limiter and launch control, depending on the mood.

Winch.

Winch wiring is located in the rear, just behind where the stock air box would be.

The stock petcock is hard to reach since the tank is raised a few inches. I added a remote petcock under the tank, just in front of the seat. The U-bolts are a temp fix for the front seat mounts. The seat mounts up higher to match the tank.
