Painting Rims?

it is a good idea to paint them, you need to get the tyres off, do all the prep work and then its best to use automotive paint. spray cans just dont have the strength to hold up to paint chips. not to mention solvents.

although the playing cards is a clever idea, i feel it is a bit of a cheapskate method. if a job is worth doing, you should do it properly or else you will soon be doing it again. Using the card method, you cannot treat the bead area which may have rust, mud and grass between the tyre sealing face and the rim. all you are doing is making them look pretty but will have a mess and will end up doing the painting all over again when you change your tyres in future.

Personally I'de get them powder coated.. may cost abit more but then your have a nice thick finish, it covers the WHOLE thing and since its thicker the tyre will sit on it tighter..

These are what I had done...

This is that happened from being dropped about 10-12 foot and bouncing about (rim sticking out further than the tyre itself)

So I doubt they will get many stone chips..still spraying is good also though!

dependin on your color... i used black underhood hi-temp spray paint and it looks good and holds up. i ride on railroad tracks and the stones hitting them doesnt chip the paint. but do your prep work. and i agree... take the tire off and do it right. if your gonna do it dont cut corners.

and you obviously got a good deal . possibly from a friend

Yeah its around $20, well the powder coating and sand blasting are done in 2 different places (£6 for sand blaster and £6.50 for powder coating) but because i get alot of friends frames and such done through these guys i get special rates ;)

I haven't actually done the card deal, but couldn't the lip of the rim be accessible if you just break the bead off the tires? Then you wouldn't scratch up your new paint job by reinstalling the tires onto the rim.

I used high temp motor paint and it works grate the main thing is clean the hell out of te wheels prep is everything if it's not preped good no matter what u do nothing will stick I didn't use primer because the paint is for metal but like I said prep is everything

I'm painting a set of rims for a friend and thats what I did. Just broke the bead, sanded the lip area and masked it off with tape. I've got the first coat on the front rims and it looks great. Once I get another coat or two on them all I'll have to do is take the tape off and seat the bead. Then they'll be ready to bolt back on the quad.
