No brakes! Question about this..

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I traded my 2001 Honda XR250R bike for a 2002 Yamaha Blaster 200cc even. So I'm still learning about the blaster but please so far. It is definitely fast to me!

The brakes do not work on the front or rear. If you pick up the front end and spin the tire and squeeze the brake lever the tire does stop but not when I'm riding it. I didn't try this with the back ones but when I press the brake pedal I see the part moving at the wheel area but does not stop.

I've read several posts trying to learn how the brakes work and read how to adjust the rear but one question is just because I see the cable moving at the wheel, this doesn't mean the caliper is moving does it?

I may eventually want to go hydro for the brakes but right now can't spend the money on it. I've read about getting the shorter cable also which I can do. I know the best thing is jump in and see the condition of the caliper and what's going on. But just checking about when can be happening even with the cable moving.

i wouldent take the rear caliper appart from what iv heard there a just a pain to take appart and put toghter but sounds like the brake pads are worn out
 
Front brakes sound like the just need adjusting too. Are they mechanicals or hydros? If they are mechanicals, like mine, to check them just loosen the tension nut on the back and then take the hub off to check the pads and the rotors for excessive wear. If that is fine, just tighten up the adjuster a couple turns and you should be fine. As for the rear, if you see the caliper moving and squeezing the pads to the rotor, but you're still not stopping, your pads are worn too much for the travel of the caliper. If you don't see the caliper moving, then like most mechanicals, from what I've read, they are dirty and need to be serviced. I just installed hydros on the rear of mine, well worth the money.
 
For the rear....take cover off, turn cable adjusted completely in, clean and grease everything in there, turn white plastic cap clockwise a few clicks to adjust pads in tighter, replace cover and check operation, cover must be on to do this, if still not grabbing, remove cover and give white cap a few more clicks, repeat until working, it would also help to replace the pads

For fronts, remove hub, brake clean everything, lightly sand the "glaze" off the pads and drum surface, turn cable adjuster completely loose, remove the 10mm bolt that holds the actuator ARM to the splined shaft on the backside, move it forward a few spines to give it further action, reassemble and test, readjust arm on splines as needed, repeat on opposite side

Both front and rears take some fooling with to get adjusted correctly, but can be made to work with good pads and some adjustments

Wd-40 them cables also to clean and lube them
 
those mechanocal brakes are a mission, but follow Awks instructions and you will be stopping in time :)

I also suggest sanding or even using a wire brush on the front pads to scuff them up a bit. remember to sand and clean the drum inner, as there is always rust and mud in there.
 
I had the same problem with my brakes too. First my back brakes went out then I was out ridin one day using only my fronts then they went out too. I was just outside messing around with the brakes and I found that if you simply turn the locknuts and the other fitting that goes over the end of the brake cable on the right side of your handle bars counterclockwise then tighten just the locknut ( clockwise ) it will increase your braking power. Now my front and rear brakes are working good. Give it a try it will only take a minute to do.
 
All suggestions as mentioned, plus make sure drums are free of rust (and dirt). Use medium or coarse emery cloth to clean and remove glazing (shiny surface), clean/lube cables, make sure pivot arm for shoes works smoothly, might have to take apart clean/de-rust, lightly lube. De-glaze shoes as mentioned. As to the back, there is a thread explaining a good method for getting them working good. Don't remember where, I have rear Warrior hydros, so I'm no help there.
 
The front drum brakes are a constant hassle . Your best bet will be to install a AWK style GSXR system out back , You can forget about the front brakes after you have a big grabber like that out back . The best option is to have a member here Norman420 machine your spindles to use the banshee hubs/Calipers , instant hydro brakes up front .
Don't worry , you'll have the " sickness " soon enough

great tip, I was getting ready to tear into my front brakes (which I probably need to do soon) but the handle bar adjustment fixed front brakes for now!
