Mufler plug

I know this is probably a stupid question but I have to ask.
What is a mufler Plug for? is it to keep the water out when you are washing it? Do you leave it in all the time?

I must have the 1 mouse that prefers 4-Strokes. I fired up the Outty last night and sh*t came shooting out the exhaust. Also, to answer the final question, no you don't leave it in all the time. To have a little fun though, duct tape a rubber glove around your buddies exhaust when he ain't looking...one of those heavy gloves, not a surgical glove. I:I
