Howdy pardners, my new tusk clutch and hd springs came today. A couple questions:

1. Has anyone used rtv on the clutch cover instead of a new gasket? I totally spaced ordering one.

2. The clutch kit says this will replace the entire clutch pack. I've been reading up and people are saying you actually need to use certain parts from the stock unit?? Like one big fiber? Kinda lost on this one.

This will be my first motorcycle style clutch change. I will marinate the fibers in atf type f over tomorrow night. I will adjust the pointer to the spot on the case. I will not over tighten and break things.

I appreciate the help. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

you need a gasket.

I believe that tusk kit does include 7 full fibers to replace the wave washer/fiber. so no old parts need used.
if it contains 1 thinner fiber to accept the wave washer, it can be used and leave the wave washer out.

pull the existing clutch fibers and steel plates out and you'll see the smaller fiber and wave washer in position # 2 out from the basket.
if the kit contains the smaller fiber, put it back in that same pos. #2 spot.

Ok thanks. I guess I can reuse the old gasket until a new one arrives, I have family coming this weekend and they're all excited about riding. Does the gasket make proper clearance? Is that why I can't just put a small bead of silicone on?

you can use the old gasket and add RTV, but not just RTV alone in my experiences.
the gasket does not involve any clearences. but seals around the bolts better than rtv alone

Ok gotcha. I really appreciate all your help. I will definitely watch for the thinner fiber, I counted them and there are seven. When I get home tonight I will soak them and see if one is thinner and report back.

Finally got home and the fibers in type f. It indeed does have one smaller fiber. So the number two spot is second from the outside or inside of basket? I'm sure I will see once I pull off the pressure plate and remove the stack, but just asking to be safe I guess.

2nd from outside. Make sure you line up the pressure plate "dot" to the clutch basket "dot" in order to align the parts correctly after install. The "dot" is just a circle mark in the parts for alignment.

Will do thanks for the help. Getting ready to make my coffee and head out to my shop now, I'm excited!
