It is a shame there aren't more 2 strokers around these days.
Some are suggesting that 2 strokes with modern electronics will soon creep their way back into the market.
Hopefully soon they will come back out with 2 strokes that have the amount of engineering and technology the 4 strokes do. I mean really for $180 I bought a module for my r/c heli, that not only stabilzes the helicopter but can have each and every parameter tuned with a android phone or tablet. I want to see the same l for a fuel injected 2 stroke.
Pull out my phone and have access to fuel, and spark curves, power valve activity, Rev limit, etc. As well as egt, cylinder temp, and afr logs. I got a feeling it's going to cost more than 2 or 3 hundred dollars, but it is exactly what modern race teams and factory tuners are doing with 4 strokes which have made leaps and bounds in power output, since the days of points and carburetors.
I remember when everyone on the track was running 2 strokes and it was not always about who could make the most power. If the track got slick it could really shake up the field. I was more fun watching the racers turn on the power and hold on, sometimes a run was all that would keep the rear from coming out frpm under the guys then next thing you know someone would come all but flat tracking it around the outside, and who Come out on top was decided by whether the guy could get back in line before the jump or the next turn. They ripped up the side of the hills spinning on the edge of loosing the rear or hooking to hard , trying to keep on the power and in the band without loosing it or wheelying out.
Those were the good old days of racing.
Now if you get loose climbing a hill, or hook and start to lift the front wheel it's a throttle adjustment and keep on keeping on not gonna loose much. I sure it's easier on the racers, to have scapel precision throttle control, as they never look near as tired and worked over at the end of most races, the'Re less injuries to. But it's not the same to watch, as it was when bikes were more of a handful.

IMO 2 strokes are alot more fun than their tamer sisters, seems from entry level 250 4 strokers right on up to the 450's 500's, even when a Raptor 700 is geared to the same to speed it, just doesn't have the kick of even a stock banshee.

Here's to the development and release of the new breed of 2 strokes and hoping that I am not to old to ride hard when it happens.
If i can find that article or others relating to some of the newer 2 stroke tech, in boat, jet and snow ski motors etc, or any plans to adapt this tech to atvs/ bikes. I will post it up here.
 
There is already evidence to hush the tree huggers, apples to apples some (evinrude I think)2 stroke boat motors are running cleaner than an equally powerful 4 stroke. I have got to hunt down some articles but basically, once you throw on fuel injection, digitally controlled power valve, direct oil jnjection, and a computer to run it all, you end up with a 2 stroke that will burn super clean, and it can gain arouby an additional 40% power just by tuning for max power rather than minimum emissions.
I need to get sit down and find the articles that support this rather than typing more unsupported drivel, now just to find the time.

They never went away...

You can still buy a two stroke bike from yamaha or husqvarna or even ktm.
 
If factory racers went back to two stroke then they would be back around more.
i see 2015 yz250 2 strokes for sale at my local yamaha dealer:)
 
Motorcycles or 4 wheelers?
It was my impression that you couldn't get either, but I don't know of any new 2 stroke Sport quads available.

Went looking for more info and first thing I found was a thread in here, that I am about to go through, than maybe I can find something more to add.

For bikes, racing a 250 2 stroke vs. a 250 4 stroke is considered unfair for the 4 stroke
making 250 2 strokes run against 450 4 strokes is way unfair for the 2 strokes.

thats why no racer runs 2 stroke

The main reason with the 2 stroke die off has to do with SALES .
It is a lot harder to learn how to ride a 2 stroke correctly 4 strokes are easier , lost SALES. It is also harder to tune one too, no high school auto classes for basic knowledge. Computer games are easier to play and don't risk them getting hurt in this PC country that lowers SALES.
A lot of sports have been made easier to play to increase SALES too. .. as in tennis ,the rackets are now a lot larger. Just like in Golf the clubs are bigger. The more people that can play or ride in a sport the more SALES that are made.
Honda made 3 and 4 wheelers for farm use at first. It was not uncommon for a farmer to bring a long trailer to our dealership and leave with 2 or 4 or more units. How many kids or young adults do you see farming now.. .lost SALES again.
The AMA was really hurting for entries to most all of the racing classes for years until the 4 strokes came .Honda was the first to quit making 2 strokes . Unless you came Europe where 2 strokes never really left , most people under 25 now have never even ridden a 2 stroke .
 
I have a lot of respect for Yamaha and Honda too , I will choose only either one to meet my needs... My jet ski is a 1999 GP 800 cc motor that makes 125 hp, its light and runs 62 mph. My wifes 1996 Waveblaster 760 cc makes 100 hp runs 52 mph and corners like a roadracer. Both are lighter than any 4 stroke on the water.

Here is a little interesting little vid, outlining the highlights of tommorows two stroke technology which is available today nand patented by rotax. It also leads to many cool vids on DI two strokes, it's funny cars use DI diesels have been direct injected much longer. In about 5 years or less many of the important patents affecting the availability of the modern day 2 stroke it's only a matter of time when people will demand the hp/liter and mpg efficiency equal to that of the 136hp 800cc direct injected, digital power valved, e-tec. It even gets 176miles/liter of mix oil!

Check it out, it's equivalent to a 34hp blaster which isn't that impressive until you consider trail riding for a week or more on one tank of oil and less than 5 gallons of gas. And this comes with better reliability than the original factory 17hp version.

Not Sure it's the same one but it is similar at least dig a little dealer and you will see it gets 176miles per liter (quart) of mix oil.
