This is some of the evolution of my 1978 Yamaha XS500 over 35 years. This past summer I sold off all the 8 valve twin engine parts and bought a hammered up '92 Blaster just to get the engine out of it.I am in the process of a full engine rebuild with Hotrods stroker crank,Wiseco piston and outer clutch basket, my own porting,Barnett clutch springs,VForce4 reeds,my own intake manifold with a Mikuni TM36.My buddy is doing the bore and squishband head. Next up, motor mounts in the bike chassis. And some engine pictures........

You squeezed some big Boyesen ports in there.. What other 2 stroke motor did you have in it at one time?

good stuff Jimmer !
keep them pics coming as this progresses

Cool build, tuned in for sure.
Buddy RD Bob from OKC just finished my head.

Why this shape? The cone is detonation prone and rpm limiting.
Why not a shallow hemi chamber like the one on the right for a high rpm screamer?

Hey Steve, probably a crappy picture. It is not a conical style. It is classic round dome /squish.The only time I have seen conical heads is old outboards. Not for me!

Plenty of room.I'll start with the rear mounts, making sure the chain clears the frame and beefy YZ250 swingarm.Yes, the kicker is an issue at this point.

Is this going to be a street bike or a race bike? If a street bike, why not retain the oil injection to avoid mixing the gas? If a track bike only, I can understand. How do you plan to support the swingarm since there is no motor going in between it? What kind of pipe will you use? Getting one custom built for it? Just a few questions. You peaked my interest.

This will be for hammering around back roads/sand roads and occasional drag use.The oil injector was neutered before I got to it.I could have replaced it,but I will have a large fuel tank and pre-mixing comes second nature to me.Swingarm has a stainlees spacer not shown, but the engine mount will probably delete the spacer anyways. At this time my intention is to fit the stock modded pipe[with a lot of work] over the cylinder. If I really do more dragracing with it,I like the RDZ pipe! I have also had really good luck with Jemco chambers.

Check into the Dt200 and Wr200 motors and there transmissions. Basically same motors as the blaster other than they are water cooled and the trans gear ratios are different and possibly better suited for your road needs. Also maybe an aftermarket pipe for one of the Wr's or Dt's might work for you.. ???

The DT200/WR200 is super rare in these parts and I didn't want a liquid motor for this project. No matter which way I go on exhaust it will have to be custom built or modified.

Motor mounts are in place, intake manifold made and installed, and I finally took a bandsaw to the stock pipe.My original intention was to run the pipe over the cylinder, but after getting the motor in place it obviously has more room underneath than above .

Major step backwards today, damn it! Did a leak down test and brand new crank seal is leaking on transmission side. This seal came with the Hotrods stroker crank,I was never really happy with the "feel" of that seal. I detected some clunking in the trans once the motor was bolted into the chassis and found the mainshaft [main axle Yamaha calls it] to have a less than perfect bearing.Item 10,which did not seem available through Yamaha, but did some homework and it looks like a 6204RS bearing. So I have some rework to do. I think the previous owner ran mud for transmission fluid.

I couldn't see anything wrong with the seal, but it is getting replaced with an OEM part.It was definitely leaking at the seal lips. Also gave a lot of thought to getting the trans bearing out.SUCCESS!!

Making good progress.Lots of details knocked out.Ran about 140' of wiring[!] for a full"real" electrical system,Vapor digital instruments, fresh 13/44 sprockets [tall rear wheel], body work mostly done,YZ250 seat reworked and reupholstered, fuel system plumbed up.
Ya got yer fancy kickstand!

The Blaster bike is getting very close! 4 gallon tank is empty,no expansion chamber, both tool bags packed full[10lbs].Just waiting on my topsecret exhaust and it will be time to sort it out.Front weighs 110 lbs, rear 127.5 lbs. This bike rolls super easy, its crazy!
