Hello, my name is jeff and I just bought a 98 blaster. I had bought a Kawasaki Kodiak a few days ago and me and my wife went riding and thought we would like another so we could both ride. Well, I found the blaster, it has about 3 hours on full rebuild (wiseco crank kit, .20 cylinder/piston, boysen (I think is the name or voysen) reeds, jetted, full fmf gold series, some kind of advancing gear, k&n filter, shorty rear brake cable, the front end is new too. I know I am forgetting stuff but that's what I can remember. I am 42 years old and took it for a ride yesterday and had no idea how fast a 200 could be. I have ridden a 300 ex and a 400 ex but this thing seems way more torque. I paid $700 for it so I think I got a good deal, the plastics are good but the brakes suck, I will be fixing that. Anyway, although I love the blaster, its not the kind of bike I should have bought. I should have bought a utility for trail riding. I may trade it or just keep it and get a utility four wheeler. Anyway, thought I would come here and learn some stuff about my blaster. Thanks.

Hi Jeff, welcome!

The very first thing you should do with a used 2 stroke is to leak test to make sure it is airtight, It may save you many $$$$$ in the future.

Thanks blaster, I was thinking that today because the engine only had about 2 hours on it and I am going to call the guy and see if he retorqued the head but still want to do a leak down test. I know nothing about 2 strokes as far as maintenance, specs. Should it hold all air pressure and how much should I put in. Thanks.

Welcome. If the timing is advanced, rotate it back to stock and it should tame it back down for easier riding.

Thanks guys, he told me it had some kind of gear to advance the timing. I ride through a lot of mud and sometimes have to go over small trees that have fell on the trails. We have very rough and washed out trails here in wv and cross creeks and rivers a lot. Do any of you guys ride a blaster in these situations? I tried to climb up a hill that my utility is so easy to go up and I bogged on the blaster cause of too high of gear and started sliding down backwards and almost flipped sideways. I could have made it in a lower gear, its just really torquey.

I ride similar stuff andI have no problems, except I know to stay out of the deep mud. Other than that, the Blaster can rip through trails and hills.

You can make these quads how you want them, that's what's really cool about them.
Some suspension, make it a little wider, and a good pipe, you have a fun trail hooker!

As with any 2 stroke, gear changing is important to keep within the powerband.

Riding a 2 stroke is a whole new kettle of fish, you have to keep the revs up, otherwise the engine will stall.

Thanks blaster. And its definitely different. I just need to "learn" it. I went up the same hill today. I just have to find the spot where I am not bogging but not too much power spinning too. This thing on a hill like that wants to either bog or stand up of spin. Its just amazing how much torque a 200 can have.

Oh yeah, just got back from a trip in WV. Hatfield McCoy, Rockhouse Trail head. Blaster works great down there. I go with all 400ex guys and they cant keep up! Like said above, with a few mods these things can rip up the trails. Longer and wider really help the whole balance of the bike. can do it for a pretty reasonable price too. arms:250, axle:150, swingarm:250.

I have never been on the hatfield trails but I know they are pretty tame for what I have to ride on. I have lots of water breaks, ditches, very steep hills with big ruts. I think I just need to learn how to keep it in the powerband without bogging or having too much power. Its been 30 years since I had a 2 stroke which was an old cr125 elsinore.

Well, I talked to the guy who built it today and asked him if he heat cycled it and he said "yeah, I actually went and seen on a forum of ken oconor racing and built it and heat cycled like he did and didn't use any paper gaskets." I thought that was cool because I saw that video on here. Also I went and picked up the extra parts I forgot when I picked up the bike and he told me that the key that was in the extra crank was stock and that is what I needed for the stock timing. Also, he did retorque the head bolts. What kind of torque rent do you guys use to get to the bolts? Mine wont fit.
