Was playing around in my yard with my son's blaster (1989), I shut it down in the driveway and then went back a few minutes later, started it in neutral and when I shifted it to first (with clutch in) it died, acted like clutch was not in, tried like three or 4 times and it would die the minute it was shifted in to gear (with clutch in). I shut if off and rocked it back in forth in gear, shifted back to neutral and started it. Acted fine after that. Any ideas if this is an impending clutch problem? (haven't had any issues with clutch till this, just bought it used about a month ago)

Have you checked oil level? What kind of oil is in the transmission? It uses specific wet clutch type oil. May need to adjust the cable. If it's stretched or worn it may not be engaging the plates fully.

oil level is good, using Honda 85 weigt tranny oil, cable seems to be adjusted ok. Only did it the once so not sure whats going on

ran it for a few hours then changed tranny oil again (with Honda 85 weight tranny oil) and it hasn't done it since. Original oil when I got it was a brilliant battleship grey so not sure if it was just the oil was trashed or something else.

85 weight oil does come out grey no matter what!
i would highly recommend you dont not use 85 weight oil,it will smoke your clutch!
oil weight should be 10w 30w or yamalube tran oil or atf ect
