Only took one taste !

He got away easy if all he locked up was the bearing.

yes he did, but i didn't, i gotta rebuild the damn thing :(
i don't even do that for myself, i put mine in a box and ken does it for me :)

Everyone should be aware 2 smokes need the throttle feathered all the time. I get tendonitis from playing to many video games. Gotta shake the thumb out once n a while. I get less fatigue with my twist and have to consciously tell myself to let off.

Good testament to the tuning that the bearings gave before the heat.

Just gotta get in my 2 cents worth.

It is possible to hold a 2 stroke WOT for extended periods, providing you use an oil with a greater film strength than mineral or synthetic oil.

Mix the fuel at a sufficient ratio of oil to suit an engine of under 200ccs.

Ensure the speed of travel is enough to provide sufficient air for cooling.

Jet on the richer side of optimum.

Desert racers are renowned to WOT for many miles in extreme heat.

I do believe Phragle will confirm my statements.

i don't believe this meltdown had diddly squat to do with oil at all.
if anywhere gets ample oil supplied it is the lower rod bearing, and there is zero evidence of oil starvation anywhere else, the piston and cylinder look perfect and the 67.50 bore is still @ .003 piston clearence, which leads me to believe it doesn't have many hours on it.
i'm pointing the finger at previously busted cast piston pieces damaging the lower rod bearing, or just plain worn out, and the 5 mile highway run just pounding the last nail in the coffin, as that rod bearing was already on it's death bed.

At WOT the lower end depletes itself of oil rapidly as oil can not be reclaimed from the pre mix fast enough to leave enough oil in the case for the crankshaft to throw around.

How are the crank main bearings?

The piston shows no sign of running dry, it must have been a bad bearing that caused the problem!

Broken piston, All the more reason for splitting the case and replacing bearings.

yes sir, she's getting a KOR rebuilt crank and new mains/seals now.
maybe i'll rub some castor oil on them for luck :)

today was engine rebuild day, everything went smooth
this thing has a brand new stator and flywheel in it, and someones been inside it before, i saw the cases slightly trenched where the crank journals drug a piece of piston around before,
and the case halves had black rtv between them

and the owner learned a little along the way....

of course we used the KOR thermal expansion method for assembly, as seen in the assembly vids
i found a 2" tow hitch ball works great for transferring the heat to the crank bearings inner race, plopped together with ease :p
gotta get it leakdown tested, back into the frame and hit the trails again :)

great progress, nice idea about the hitch ball:)

yep,
i just let ken do all my work :) so i never had a need for a 2" steel dowel rod, while searching my old neighbors garage for a piece, I spied the old tow ball, and it worked great.
figured i'd throw that out there for anyone else looking to do this, as a ball can be had at walmart for cheap if dowel isn't available.

this engine has been sitting on my workbench for over a week, leakdown tested.
yesterday we finally found time to install it, fired right up, couple heat cycles and he went riding with my neighbor
with the rhino.
ride report is it runs better than it ever did :)

little update on this bike...been running great for 2 weeks now, he and my neighbor have been going 3-4 nights a week
I'm on injured reserves for a minute and haven't gotten to ride with these guys yet
yesterday the FMF pipe came for it and we threw the only suitable jet i had in it, a 300
he grabbed a 290 on his way home and threw it in this morning all by himself :)
then they headed to Rock Run for the day, if he was in love before, i'm sure he proposed to it today :D
I got this sh*tty cell vid of him ripping some little hills texted me me a few hours ago.....
