1st gear noise and 2nd gear locking?

I bought my first blaster but I own a raptor 350. After picking it up, we got it cranked immediatly. When shifting into first and releasing the clutch it starts clanking pretty bad(sounds like a missing tooth). When I shift to second it stops making noise and seems to ride fine and fast through the rest of the gears. BUT, if you dont shift out of second quick enough, the wheels lock up and won't come out without rocking for a few minutes.
I will be tearing the engine down within the next few days but I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts.

Btw, it has had a top end rebuild, new piston and barely bored if any.
It also has a new carrier bearing.
Thanks

i'd remove the chain and check that carrier again,
then move on to the clutch and flywheel side covers to see if anything is wrong in there,
before splitting the cases looking for an internal tranny/gear problem

Might want to do a oil change if nothing else because you just got it. And you can look through the oil for and metal shreds.

Sorry, we had already drained and refilled with gear saver but didn't find and chunks/shavings.
Supposedly has a relatively new clutch but I know that doesn't mean much.

Seems like a harmless cry for help. Yet only one tollerable reply. No wonder he got angry.
Having similar issue with second gear locking up the back wheels. Mine is def not the carrier bearing. without the chain, I pulled it for a few miles from where it locked up on my son, to home without issues. The clutch looks great, aswell as the flywheel side. I have the bike disassembled, just waiting for the flywheel puller to pop the case.

sounds like it's time to split the cases and do some more in-depth looking around

it's most likely a bent shift fork. you'll be able to identify it by excessive wear on either side of one of the forks. also check for burs and wear on the sliders for the forks.

Thanks Brandoz for that professionalesque answer. Most specific and reasonable answer ive seen (not being sarcastic).

I have another idea actually, I was just seeing if anyone else had anything else first.

If it's an older blaster, the shift star has a "torx" screw in the middle. If it works its way out, the shifter can "feel" like it's in second but actually the shift drum can have it between 1st and neutral and between 2nd and 3rd.

Unfortunately, if you've been riding it long in this condition at all, you'd probably boogered the shift forks or engagement dogs and a case split may have to happen anyway.

I totally spaced the star being a possibility. that's also why a lot of people weld them to the drum

From somewhere in the mid 90's yamaha welded them. The drum and star are machined exactly like they were but instead of a little key, a washer, and a torx screw they just have a bead all the way around them.

Well mine is a 2000 and ill check on that either way. Thanks, and Brandoz ive searched this forum for days for any real clues. I only joined today to post because I found very little help and you have to read through tons of awful posts to find one person who says something that makes sense. I found this thread and another by the same banned individual who has had the same issues with the forum, most of its replying members and 2nd gear locking up....
