what's the proper way to remove the axle from the carrier of an 02 blaster? i have the swingarm removed with the axle and carrier installed. i would like to leave the carrier in the arm if possible.

Thanks
David

its probably best to have the carrier out of the S.arm, if you are not going to use the bearings again, you can man-handle it and hit if out while holding it on a workbench or something... it should come out fairly easily unless you have no grease in there...

To be honest the easiest way to remove the axle is leaving the carrier in the swingarm, and just lifting the rear of the bike. Remove the 2 large nuts on the left(haha, I said 2 nuts) and then work the sprocket hub off, and the brake hub clips need to be removed, etc. Remove the wheel hubs, then spray the ish out of the carrier ends inside, after removing the rubber covers toreveal the internals. The axle will come out to the right side, or brake side, only way out. Tap it from the left side with a rubber mallet, and as said depending how bad the carrier bearings are seized, no grease, etc is how hard it will take to get it out. I had to pound the ISH outta mine, but did not care as I was tossing it and re-installing a banshee axle anyway, but again had to beat the piss out of it to get it to break free.

2002 blaster, just like yours...

good luck!!! I:I

Just a tip, if you are planning on saving the axle. Use a big wooden block to pound the ends and wrap the axle threads with electrical tape or teflon tape...:D

thanks guys :) i will be reusing mine and possibly the bearings depending on the condition. any guestimate what new bearings/seals would run?

if the axle won't come out of the carrier with the nuts removed. take the whole carrier and axle off the quad and slam the left side of the axle down hard repeatedly on a block of wood while holding it by the carrier. it will come loose sooner or later.

Maybe and maybe not. I had to cut the carrier and bearings off mine. I had beat it, heated it, and sprayed the hell out of it with and entire can of PB Blaster. Would not budge. It was an 01 with original bearings and no grease or zerk. If you get it out replace the bearings. They are not that expensive. Also install a grease zerk in the carrier if there is not one in there. You will be glad you did if you ever ha e to take it out again.

Or...

slide a deep well impact socket over the threads, so the forces of the blow (he he, I said blow) go against the axle rather than the threads.

If I ever get the %#@&ing sprocket hub off the axle, i can work on the brgs. I have heated to dull red, PB Blastered ,more heat, beat with pipe protector over threads , tried one homemade puller, have new design puller in the works. Hate the thought of spending $20 at auto parts to have it pressed.

Probably take either grinder or cutting torch to brgs because I'm getting so tired of it X( , gotta be ready for Memorial day weekend. I:I Probably won't get swing arm brgs in. Wish I had something bigger than a 2lb hammer. Never force it, get a bigger hammer :D

Same situation I had. 8lb sledge would not move mine. I litterally cut the carrier in half, then the same with the bearings, spacer and sprocket hub. I had spares of all of them so I was not concerned with saving them. Bought a spare axle from AWK just in case my other one was not salvageable when I got it out. It actually cleaned up nicely with a wire wheel once I got it all apart. Still have a spare axle that I will sell cheap to help someone out if they need it and return the favor that was extended to me.

i had this problem once and once only, when i finally got the damn thing out and reinstalled we installed a zerk fitting into the carrier and i keep it full of grease and now the axle falls right out every time with ease.

I woosed out. Even with a puller made with5/8 threaded rod and some other junk and heat and impact, the hub would not come off. Lucky for me a complete carrier/axle/hubs came up on CL for $50. I:I tite brgs, no rust/corrosion . Going pull it apart and put zerk in it.

Here is some pics of the carnage I had to deal with. Lesson learned....Install and use grease zerks.

After the 8lb sledge wouldnt move it.

Actually should put anti-seize on axle where spacer goes and on splines for all hubs. I'll have to get my son to post pics of my puller that deformed and still didn't budge the hub. That's what 20 years of rust will get ya.
